We exist to do one thing, and one thing only - to seriously put a dent in single-use beverage container waste in Malta.  Through our Beverage Container Refund Scheme, we aim to collect and recycle up to 90% of all single-use beverage containers placed on the Maltese market by 2026. Needless to say, this will seriously contribute towards the country’s environmental targets and well-being.

We have all heard so much about waste and all the issues its brings with it. Now is the time to take action!

BCRS Malta Ltd., incorporated by the Malta Beverage Producers Association, the Malta Beverage Importers Association and the Malta Beverage Retailers Association, operates on a not-for-profit, lowest cost principle model to minimize the impact on the beverage sector, making producers and consumers jointly responsible for the recycling of beverage container waste, towards a higher national effort in recycling and litter reduction.

BCRS is fully aware that this will take a considerable effort from all involved as this entire process will entail a Cultural Shift to an extent. We are convinced that all stakeholders and later on the Maltese public will come on board this innovative system for the benefit of all. After all this is an Environmental Initiative that can only be successful with everyone’s collaboration.

Some of us might be tempted to resist the change – but history teaches us that every change brings with it its challenges, but in the long run, we all agree that we will be thankful we have taken this ambitious step forward for the better of our country and the future generations.

This scheme is a great opportunity for our country to rise to the challenge and effectively act in favour of our environment!

In Malta, we recycle only around 15 per cent of beverage containers, whereas countries like Estonia and Lithuania recycle some 92 per cent through a similar scheme. Together we can be successful in reaching these ambitious goals leading to a cleaner Malta.
